TWO OF THEM
Anne McConnell and her brother, former First Minister, Jack

JACK McConnell’s thieving sister will have to sell her house after her family refused to help her pay back £9000 she stole from a frail pensioner.

Anne McConnell, 51, took the cash from an 80-year-old woman she was hired to care for. She told police she hoped Lord McConnell would help her repay it.

But the former first minister and the rest of her family said it was her responsibility.

McConnell’s lawyer Peter Lockhart told a court today: “The family are supportive but they are not in a position, nor prepared, to pay this money.

“It is for the accused to pay it. That’s their position.”

McConnell stole from the old lady over six months last year after getting hold of her bank card and PIN number while working for her on Arran.

The victim has severe arthritis. McConnell was originally accused of stealing £17,900 but the sum was reduced after a deal with prosecutors.

She told police she did it because she was going through the menopause and needed money for her mortgage. She hoped her brother, who was first minister between 2001 an d 2007, would come to her aid.

Mr Lockhart said a police officer asked McConnell: “Have you spoken to Jack in relation to this?”

She replied: “No, not yet.”

Mr Lockhart said his client was putting her Arann home on the market and the sale would raise enough to pay her debt.

He said the old lady’s bank had reimbursed her and McConnell must now repay the bank. She was a caring person who knew she had committed a despicable crime and was racked with guilt.

Mr Lockhart asked the court not to jail his client, saying her 15-year-old daughter had health problems.

Kilmarnock sheriff Elizabeth McCabe deferred sentence to give McConnell a chance to pay back the money.

She told the nervous-looking thief: “I want it repaid in full by the time I see you in three months. Is that clear?”

McConnell replied: “Yes.”
